Open Holstein Heifers

A few weeks ago, we commented in this space that open heifers seemed to be moving on a more active market, and at steady, rather than falling prices.

Since then, there is no longer any doubt that the market on dairy cattle has passed the low, and is significantly higher. Whether these young cattle, will continue to be in such strong demand, is dependent on other influences, of course.

But right now buyers are looking ahead with the expectation of seeing good demand for them a year or so from now, when they are ready to go into production.

Our belief, at that time, was that all dairy cattle were a good buy, and would be bringing higher prices in a relatively short time.

That has certainly proven to be exactly what has transpired in the space of one month. Brokers, dairy auctions and expanding dairies all report increases of $100 per head on yearling Holsteins, and more on springers and cows.

Of course, as always, we use only top cattle as examples. Common cattle are still moving at uneven figures.
